Open Kitchen Weekender at BAK

The Open Kitchen Weekender (OKW), one of the last celebratory moments at BAK. As part of the Community Portal (Civic Praxis program) at BAK basis voor actuele kunst, Utrecht, the basic activist kitchen (b.a.k.) with their amazing research on community kitchens (from setting them up, to their ways of operating and organising, building network and more) a three day event brings together many collaborators and audiences around cooking and sound.

Beyond helping with my limited skills in logistics and finance, I contributed to the OKW with co-designing and building some furniture pieces. The process of co-designing was a based in conversations with Grace Lostia and Cristina Lavosi.

The furniture was build using recycled materials from BAK’s storage. This DIY, perhaps improvised design, was also inspired by feminist and queer theory (perhaps with a tad of theosophy?). More specifically, with the building strategy I tried to embraced the diversity of shapes and materials, the state they where in and their formal qualities, prioritising the furniture’s capacity to fulfil (with care) the specific needs required over efficiency and stylistic pretension.

The sign was drawn by Berend Bombarius.
